Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (better known as TENS) is a non-invasive method for effective pain relief. This method uses a compact device, known as a TENS unit, which is connected to the skin via thin wires and special electrodes.
The electrodes, which are attached to the skin, transmit a low voltage to the body via electrical signals. The frequency and intensity of these signals can be adjusted according to individual needs and preferences.
It is important to realise that TENS is not a panacea. It temporarily relieves pain but does not cure it. However, for many it is a useful pain management tool for a variety of conditions and situations.
For which diseases is TENS used?
